National Unclaimed Property: time to check if there’s any for you, avoid fraud texts
Rhode Island General Treasurer James A. Diossa marked National Unclaimed Property Day in a new video. “This National Unclaimed Property Day, I am spreading awareness to make sure people are reunited with their money,” said General Treasurer Diossa. “More than 300,000 Rhode Islanders have property waiting to be returned to them and I want it returned to them. I encourage folks to visit FindRIMoney.com for a quick search—that will take less than 30 seconds—to see if they have unclaimed cash.”
Unclaimed property consists of financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for several years. When that happens, and the company cannot locate the owner, the money or properties are submitted to the Office of the General Treasurer. Unclaimed property includes bank accounts, wages, refunds, insurance payments, and more. More information can be found at FindRIMoney.com. You may also contact RI Unclaimed Property at (401)462-7676 and at [email protected].
FRAUD ALERT: The Office of the RI General Treasurer has learned individuals are receiving potentially fraudulent text messages that appear to notify people that they have unclaimed property and asks them to click a link. The State of Rhode Island Unclaimed Property Division DOES NOT communicate with members of the public via text message. ANY TEXT MESSAGE REGARDING UNCLAIMED PROPERTY IS NOT AN OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION FROM THE STATE AND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH EXTREME CAUTION. Recipients are advised to ignore or delete these text messages.
