Message of Contempt – Commentary, Michael Morse
It’s bad enough that advertising has invaded my paid streaming universe, but what makes it worse is political ads. And worst of all are the people in those ads beginning their message with a predictable Trump is my boogeyman tirade.
Fighting Trump is the battle cry for the Democrats who have entered into the election arena. Resisting ICE is usually next. Our candidates for Governor, Attorney General, US Congress and anything that involves convincing people to support “them” and not “those others” believe it is a given that the people with the power to put them in office live in the same anti Trump bubble as their peers.
We do not.
40% of Rhode Islanders who voted voted for Trump in 2024. Some of those 40% would vote Republican no matter who was on the ballot, but most are independent voters who simply vote for the person they believe has the best interests of our country, our families and ourselves at heart. A lot of us remember previous presidential administrations, and through the lens of history understand that through all of the bias, propaganda and gamesmanship nothing much changes no matter who sits in the White House. It’s the politicians in the trenches of state, city and local government that affect us most.
In all likelihood one of the campaigns that follow their focus group’s advice, and rely on talking points from the DNC will emerge victorious after they beat each other up in the primaries and then begin attacking their opponents on the other side. They will paint anybody not a Democrat as a Trump supporter. Truth is, most people who voted for Trump did so because the alternative was irreparably flawed. The mythological Trump Supporter is actually one of us, a person not mired in the endless ideological battle between my way and the wrong way, just a citizen who takes voting seriously and will use what little power the ballot holds to support the person whose vision for the future most aligns with theirs.
They are not the enemy. Mocking them in political advertising is no way to lead. Showing contempt to 40% of the electorate accomplishes nothing. Catering to a base that is already convinced that the Man in the White House is responsible for their misery is disrespectful to all of us.

Many in the referenced 40% now have serious regrets that they voted for Trump. 2024 election was almost two years ago, and since then, Trump’s poll numbers have tanked for many good reasons—he is responsible for the plethora of damage from Doge to Ice and civilian murders to Iran to demolitions of iconic Washington structures to accruing immense personal wealth at the expense of the US taxpayer- etc, etc, etc. He needs to suffer our strongest criticism as do they who might continue to support his crimes, malice, and narcissism. But it is all Biden’s fault now anyway!
What we are deceived by others, is what we have not dealt with in our own natures.
Whether bashing is bad behavior is not the point here. People were afraid to bash Hitler. They are afraid to bash Putin. No one as self-serving, duplicitous and destructive as Trump should be off limits to the open honest expression of contempt by the citizens who bear the brunt of his careless mishandling of our economy and our way of life.
Would you have us ignore the crumbling of democracy in silence? Wake up! Trump does not deserve careful handling or consideration. He deserves to be removed from office because of his contempt for our country.
What we are deceived by in others, is what we have not dealt with in our own natures.
The Trump bashing is the main reason I may not vote for a candidate that I feel is good for our state! I have never been one party or another, but I vote for who I hope will be the best person for the job. If the bashing is the only thing that the Democrats have…we may be in trouble!
Trump bashing should never be a reason for not voting for a candidate you like. It has nothing to do with any political party either.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a Trump basher, but that’s who I bash. The person who supports him, I’ll leave them alone. It’s their opinion.
However, I shall go after someone who puts out a litany praising him. I fact-check several sources. There’s too much dis/misinformation. Some of it is deliberate. In this day of technology, we have the internet at our fingertips.
Vote for the person who aligns with your beliefs.
