Merry Christmas, Providence College. $5 million gift for athletic, academic, student programs
It was announced today that a new endowed fund to support the Providence College men’s basketball team is one of several initiatives that will benefit from a $5 million gift announced today by Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Napolillo. The donor wishes to remain anonymous.
The multi-faceted gift will have impact beyond Friar Athletics, by also providing support for student financial aid and the Ben Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences, which is currently under construction on East Campus.
“By its comprehensive nature, this gift is certain to have a broad, enduring impact for generations to come. We are both grateful and humbled by this generosity,” said Providence College president Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard, O.P.
The gift breaks down into six categories:
- Establishment of an endowed fund to support the immediate needs of the men’s basketball program
- Establishment of an endowed fund to assist PC students with financial need
- Support for the Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences building fund
- Funding for the men’s hockey team to use in addressing immediate needs
- Funding for the women’s basketball team to use in addressing immediate needs
- Support for the Ruane Championship fund, which is used when Friar teams are competing in their respective NCAA tournaments
“This generous gift positions Providence College to recruit on the national scale for the highest caliber students and student-athletes,” Napolillo said. “As landscapes change, the impact of this gift will position Friar athletics to continue to compete for championships.”
