How You “Fetch” Your News Has Never Been More Different – RINewsToday’s Top 10 Most-Read Stories of 2025
by Nancy Thomas, publisher
We look back at the Top 10 Most Read Stories in 2025 at RINewsToday. They are:
1. Homelesss in RI – the story of Rico, who froze to death on North Main St in Providence, while the annual Point in Time homeless person count was being done, and staff doing the count may have walked right by him, thinking he was asleep – counting him as well. Telling the stories of individuals continues to be the most effective way of changing systems.
2. Expose on the Mount Hope Bridge and its much needed repairs – soon after this article, the bridge had a “topcoat” put on to make our ride less teeth-chattering – but without permanent repairs made, though now acknowledged.
3. The RI Healthcare Crisis looked at the state of our waning healthcare workers and accessibility – ER overloads, etc. As 2026 begins, the situation is only more troublesome, with thousands still without primary care and urgent cares stepping up to fill in, out of necessity, and informally.
4. Bonnet Shores corruption? Brought up by a new area resident – some things have changed – but under the beauty of the sand and ocean, a troublesome group continues on.
5. Brown University Shooting – perhaps the biggest story of the year in Rhode Island – making national news and international news. As students move back in for next week, watch for our follow-up on new security systems put in place – or not.
6. Veterans! The topic continues among the most popular. Here, Veterans Day activities were detailed around the state. John A. Cianci continues to be a staunch advocate for veteran needs – he’ll have some new ventures to share with us soon, too!
7. July 4th ushered us in as an annual source of information on where to go to see the fireworks or enjoy the patriotism that is, no doubt about it, on the rise. Always among our most popular.
8. Homeless in RI: Almost $700,000 in designated gifts to Crossroads that they put “up on the roof” in the form of changing LED colored lights. We got the attention of powers that be at the RI State House, the media amplified the outrage, and Crossroads shut down talking – almost to any media outlet – and a paid PR consultant was in place to give you the “no comment”. Crossroads continues as the state’s largest homeless “advocate” agency – and at times their decisions boggles the mind. From LED lights to policies that require emergency overnighters to sit up in a chair and “don’t fall asleep” – more is coming on this.
9. Assault weapons ban – of sorts – passes in Rhode Island – as restrictions on 2A rights continues from state to state, as ways to decrease gun violence leave many not knowing what to do – so 2A becomes the low-hanging fruit.
10. Equipping a whole city’s fire department with PFAS-free gear sets the bar – high – we know Rhode Island will continue to protect those who protect us.
