With low temperatures expected this weekend, the Executive Office of Housing is announcing the activation of three emergency winter pop-up sites in Providence to provide immediate, safe, and warm overnight shelter for Rhode Islanders in need.

Emergency pop-up sites are temporary locations activated during periods of severe or inclement weather. Hours, accommodations, and services may vary, but all are focused on keeping people safe during extreme cold conditions.

The emergency pop-up sites, operated by the Council of Churches, will be open December 26 and December 27, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and are available to all individuals seeking refuge from the cold. Individuals should go directly to the location listed below to access services:

  • Matthewson Street Church, 134 Matthewson Street, Providence, RI
  • Community Church of Providence, 372 Wayland Avenue, Providence, RI
  • Table of Christ, 1520 Broad Street, Providence, RI

In addition to these emergency pop-up sites, Rhode Island has seasonal emergency shelters, overnight warming centers, daytime resource centers, and state-funded year-round shelters operating across the state. A comprehensive, up-to-date list of all available resources can be found at: https://housing.ri.gov/resources/individuals-experiencing-homelessness

Municipalities may also open community-based warming centers during extreme weather events. Residents are encouraged to contact their city or town directly for information on local resources.

The Executive Office of Housing encourages media outlets and community partners to share this information widely to ensure Rhode Islanders know where to go to stay safe and warm during this weekend’s cold weather.
