Hearts in Bloom with the PawSox for Valentine’s Day
For nearly ten years, the American Heart Association in Rhode Island ran a Valentine’s Day program called Hearts in Bloom. It’s 2-fold: to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke during February, American Heart Month – and to raise funds to support their programs.
The program grew over the years and became workplace based as company coordinators would take orders for bouquets of beautiful red tulips. Thousands each year would receive their minimalist gift also with the knowledge that their “giver” had supported a cause to help save lives.
After a few years, the AHA added a companion “executive” program of Hearts in Bloom provided boxes of long-stemmed red roses for a much higher cost, and usually most company orders had a few of these sprinkled in, too. Hundreds of volunteers each year would drive the group tulip orders to the companies and hand-deliver the roses to individuals.
After so many years of success, the controlling powers that be – in Dallas – for the AHA’s corporate offices decided they didn’t want to support the program because Hearts in Bloom was not available in every state and in every chapter. So be it. As usual, any discussion fell on deaf corporate ears. The sad loss of Hearts in Bloom is remembered by many.
