Get your holiday(s) on! – tree lightings, events, all over Rhode Island

(Check back over the next few days as this article will be updated with new events and schedule changes, as we know them)

A collection of ways to get in the holiday spirit. The first is Providence with 3 days of activities – ALL subject to change with the weather situation. This info is accurate as we know it – again, check with the city for changes (such as tree lighting moved to Sunday)

Dec. 2-4 – City of Providence – Annual Tree Lighting & 3 Nights of Lights celebration – with US Olympics Medalist Nancy Kerrigan returns to host all-star skating show. at BankNewport City Center Carolers from Trinity Rep. Sackett Street Elementary School Choir to perform, and Ebenezer Scrooge from Trinity Rep’s A Christmas Carol will make an appearance. Performance by Dr. Michelle Cruz, Director of Community Engagement at Trinity Rep. 

On Sunday, 5pm – Tree Lighting (moved from Friday night) – the Brown University Marching Band and a star-studded ice-skating show hosted by Nancy Kerrigan and an all-star lineup with Olympic Team Medalists and National Champions Jason Brown, Karen Chen, and Rhode Island’s Marissa Castelli. Also performing will be international and national competitors Heidi Munger, Jun Hong Chen, Phillip Baker, and the 2019 Nations’ Cup Silver Medalists Ocean State Ice Theatre. Joining them will be 2022-2023 National Qualifying Series Medalists Sasha Streeter, Sean Chien, and Jonah Sobieraj, as well as local stars from BV Skating and Mount Saint Charles Academy. WaterFire on December 1 and 2 will have partial lightings, performances, food trucks and more.

December 2 – outdoor screening of “Urban Carnevale” presented by FirstWorks.  Visit the Three Nights of Lights website for more details.

While downtown, residents and visitors may notice festive lights thanks to The Avenue Concept and the Providence Tourism Council. The Avenue Concept will illuminate 12 murals and sculptures throughout Downtown, with activations and layers of sound and performance. And once again, the Providence Tourism Council has partnered with the City of Providence to launch the “Illuminate PVD” campaign, brightening the streets of Providence by activating and illuminating the City’s public spaces and buildings. Activations this year include the installation of digital snowflakes on light poles, holiday décor, and colorful lighting installations at Providence City Hall and Biltmore Park.

Dec. 3 – 6:15 pm – Newport – Illuminated Newport Boat Show (CANCELED)

Dec. 3 – noon to 8pm – Newport – SantaCon – part of a national event where people dress in Santa Claus costumes or as other Christmas / Holiday characters and parade through Newpport and several cities worldwide. Dec 3 – Newport –  Lucy’s Hearth Wreath Sale 

Dec. 3 & 4 – Newport – Inn at Castle Hill – 2nd annual James L. Maher Center Popup Tree and Wreath Sale at Castle Hill Inn both days from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Supports the Maher Center. Refreshments, holiday music, and a keepsake photo op at the magical “Letters to Santa” mailbox – as well as the very special experience of browsing for the perfect tree or wreath in the idyllic setting of the Inn’s Chalet Lawn. Balsam roping and other greenery will also be available for sale.  All proceeds benefit the James L. Maher Center’s programs and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
