U.S. coronavirus deaths surpass 110,000

CDC director advises protesters get tested for coronavirus: ‘I do think there is a potential for this to be a seeding event. The director also recommended that those who attended protests inform their loved ones and get tested within three to seven days of being out in public to prevent the spread of infection. African Americans are being disproportionately affected by the virus, both in terms of infections and deaths. There is concern that protesters may be traveling to and from a various cities and states. “Chains of transmission will become lit from these gatherings,” said Dr. Gottlieb, former FDA commissioner.

Dr Katie Passaretti, medical director for infection prevention at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, said about the number of people close together at protest events, “It’s a setup for further spread of Covid,” she added. “It’s heartbreaking.”

North Carolina sets record for new cases for the 3rd straight day. and 26 new deaths on Saturday. The spike comes more than two weeks after North Carolina lifted its stay-at-home rules, allowing for limited social gatherings and letting restaurants reopen to customers with reduced capacity.

CDC’s Dr. Robert Redfield advised demonstrators to “highly consider” a coronavirus test. That doesn’t mean go to a testing site a day after protesting. The virus enters your body immediately.  But it does take some time for enough of the virus to build up in your system for a diagnostic test to detect it. In three, five, seven days, go get tested,” Redfield said. Getting a test too early could result in a false negative.  So waiting between 3-7 days will give a more accurate read.

Governor Raimondo issued a statement apologizing for not wearing her own face mask when she spoke to the protesting crowd on Friday night: “The late hours in front of the State House last night were tense and hectic, and in that moment I neglected to put on a mask. That was wrong, it was counter to our public health guidance, and I apologize. I have worked today to track down the names of those I was in contact with so that they can be added to my contact tracing notebook.” The Governor later responded to a query by Tara Granahan asking if she intends to quarantine: “No — our public health guidance is to self-quarantine only if you are sick or have been in close-contact with someone who tested positive.”

For those who participated in demonstrations and could not keep within 6 feet of social distancing, the CDC recommends: “Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others. Quarantine helps prevent spread of disease that can occur before a person knows they are sick or if they are infected with the virus without feeling symptoms. People in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their state or local health department.

“Room with a View” a 30-minute television program airs at 2pm on CW Providence during the week and on Sundays on Fox Providence at 8am and on MyRITV at 9am. The show is designed for RI’s nursing home community of quarantined residents, described as “disconnected and sad and anxious,” the CEO of CareLink. The show was funded by the RI Foundation, and produced by CareLink.
