Providence Art Club to host new exhibitions featuring Big Art, Arts Professionals, and Community Members

The Galleries of the historic Providence Art Club will host three new exhibitions with celebratory opening receptions on Sunday, January 28 from 2-4pm. The shows will feature large-scale artworks, works by arts professional members of the Club, and a collection of pieces by non-member artists from throughout Rhode Island. The Art Club’s galleries are always free and open to the public.

In the Maxwell Mays Gallery, about forty works will be on view in the Club’s third installment of its popular Big Pictures Show. This exhibition encourages artist members of the Club to create works in larger sizes, with a minimum scale of 30” necessary to take part. On view in the Mary Castelnovo Gallery, the Club will host its Second Annual Arts Professional Member Showcase which will highlight the talents of its arts professional members. These individuals have careers in fields like architecture, interior design, museums, and academia, but typically do not exhibit. This special show is a chance to celebrate their personal creative talents.

In the Club’s ground floor Dodge House Gallery, a collection of works by non-member artists from throughout Rhode Island will be on view in the Club’s Third Annual Community Invitational Exhibition. First mounted during the pandemic and now an annual tradition, the Community Invitational is organized by gallery manager Michael Rose and is an opportunity for active artists from the state who are not members of the Club to show in its historic galleries.

Speaking of the show, Rose says, “We are excited to host another Community Invitational Exhibition. This show is focused on sharing the Club’s remarkable exhibition venues with talented makers from around the state and to highlight their considerable talent and vision. We look forward to welcoming a new generation of artists to exhibit in one of the state’s oldest galleries.”

For more information about these exhibitions or to schedule an interview with participating artists, please contact Art Club Gallery Manager Michael Rose at 401-331-1114 ext.5, or via email at [email protected].

About the Providence Art Club:

Founded in 1880 to stimulate the appreciation of art in the community, the Club has long been a place for artists and art patrons to congregate, create, display and circulate works of art.  Located along Thomas Street, in the shadow of the First Baptist Church, the Providence Art Club is a picturesque procession of historic houses, home to studios, galleries and the clubhouse. Through its public programs, its art instruction classes for members and its active exhibition schedule, the Providence Art Club continues a tradition of sponsoring and supporting the visual arts in Providence and throughout Rhode Island.

All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
