About the RI Watercolor Society

Founded in 1896, Rhode Island Watercolor Society (RIWS) is one of the oldest watercolor organizations in America. With over 300 members, RIWS provides artists and the general public the opportunity to view, purchase, exhibit and learn about water media art.

RIWS offers classes, workshops and demonstrations by nationally and regionally acclaimed artists. We have been proud to host Soon Y Warren, Paul Jackson, Joel Popadics, Vladislav Yeliseyev (in association with the New England Watercolor Society), Lian Quan Zhen, Irena Roman, Paul George, Tom Lynch, Birgit O’Connor, and more. RIWS also hosts opening receptions for each of its in-person exhibitions that are free and open to the public. Located in the JC Potter Casino Building, a historic lakeside “boathouse” in Slater Memorial Park, RIWS features an art gallery, library and studio space. The gallery hosts around 8 in-person shows per year, including the National Watermedia Exhibition & the Simply Watercolor Exhibition, as well as many online shows in between.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote and celebrate the arts and artists through education, exhibitions, and community involvement.
