Free Admission Weekend – Newport Art, Children’s + RISD Museums for Labor Day from BofA

This Labor Day weekend, September 5 and 6th, Bank of America cardholders can take advantage of Museums on Us, which offers free general admission to the Newport Art Museum, Providence Children’s Museum and RISD Museum!
On display this weekend to say goodbye to summer –
Newport Art Museum:
The Newport Art Museum presents Play / Pretend — a cross-generational exhibition exploring how imagination shapes identity from childhood through adulthood.
From building blanket forts to inventing elaborate storylines for dolls and action figures, childhood play allows us to test roles and imagine new possibilities. Newport-based artist Sam Heydt will create a special pop-up environment that dissolves the boundary between observer and participant
Providence Children’s Museum:
Maker Studio – Mini Masters: Yayoi Kusama: In honor of her recent passing, our artist inspiration this week is Yayoi Kusama. Learn about Yayoi Kusama and create your own works of polka dot art in Maker Studio.
RISD Museum: Cloth of the Earth

Indigo, Cape Verde, and West African Knowledge (opened 8/1)

Cloth of the Earth: Indigo, Cape Verde, and West African Knowledge brings together indigo-dyed textiles and clothing from the RISD Museum’s collection alongside contemporary West African indigo-dyed works on loan from local community member Maria Tavares, a native of the Cape Verde Islands.

At the heart of the exhibition is a Cape Verdean panu di terra (“cloth of the earth”), a complex handwoven textile that embodies stories of cultural memory, resistance, and renewal.
