House of Portugal Pavilion opens in Providence as Pawtucket plans Cabo Verde World Cup send-off
By: Ann Clanton, contributing writer
Providence cut the ribbon today on a new Portugal-themed soccer and cultural hub at Waterplace Park Pavilion, opening the House of Portugal / Portugal Futebol Experience as Rhode Island steps into the regional excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event officially launched Rhode Island Summer of Soccer, with Unisport Soccer, and PUMA providing the Portugal Futebol Experience yesterday.
The pavilion, located in the heart of downtown Providence, will serve as a gathering place for soccer fans, Portuguese culture, fan activities, merchandise, match-watch events and community programming throughout the summer. It is part of Rhode Island’s broader “Summer of Soccer” effort, connecting the state to World Cup visitors and events across New England.
What makes the Providence site especially interesting is this: Portugal’s national team is not scheduled to play in Providence, or Boston (Foxboro). Still, organizers chose Rhode Island as the home for a Portugal-centered fan experience — and that choice makes cultural sense.
Here is their schedule:
Portugal is in Group K, and its scheduled group-stage games are:
| Date | Match | Stadium / City |
|---|---|---|
| June 17, 2026 | Portugal vs. DR Congo | NRG Stadium, Houston |
| June 23, 2026 | Portugal vs. Uzbekistan | NRG Stadium, Houston |
| June 27, 2026 | Colombia vs. Portugal | Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens |
Rhode Island has one of the strongest Portuguese-American identities in the country. For generations, families with roots in mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira and Portuguese-speaking communities have helped shape the state’s neighborhoods, businesses, churches, restaurants, festivals, civic life and sports culture. That history is especially visible in East Providence, Bristol, Warren, Tiverton, Pawtucket, Providence and nearby southeastern Massachusetts.
The Portuguese in New England dates back well over a century, tied in part to the region’s maritime, fishing, whaling and mill economies. Over time, Portuguese families built churches, clubs, bakeries, markets, restaurants and community organizations that became part of Rhode Island’s everyday life. The Day of Portugal celebration, held annually in Providence, remains one of the most visible expressions of that heritage.
Soccer — futebol — is a natural centerpiece for that story. In Portugal, soccer is more than a sport. It is part of national identity, family life and local pride, from neighborhood clubs to international stars. Portuguese fans have followed generations of players from Eusébio to Luís Figo to Cristiano Ronaldo, and the national team’s games are often watched as shared community moments across the Portuguese diaspora.
That passion is also deeply familiar in Rhode Island. Long before soccer became a national American growth sport, immigrant communities and ethnic clubs helped keep the game alive in New England. Pawtucket, East Providence, Fall River and the wider South Coast have long been part of that soccer map, with community teams, local leagues and cultural clubs helping build the sport from the ground up.
This weekend, the soccer connection gets another boost when Portuguese soccer legend Vítor Baía is expected in Providence for Rhode Island Day of Portugal events. Baía, a former goalkeeper for Portugal’s national team, FC Porto and Barcelona, brings international soccer stature to the local celebration. His appearance ties the new downtown pavilion directly to Portugal’s football history — and gives local fans a chance to connect with one of the country’s best-known names in the sport.
For Providence, the pavilion also gives new life to Waterplace Park Pavilion, a downtown space that has seen long stretches of underuse. During the World Cup season, it will become a more active public gathering place, drawing residents, visitors and soccer fans into the city center.

The Rhode Island Day of Portugal festival is scheduled for this weekend in Providence, with music, food, traditional culture, parade activity and community celebration. Together with the new Portugal Pavilion, it creates a multi-day Portuguese cultural moment in the capital city — one that blends heritage, sports and World Cup energy. Related World Cup note: Cabo Verde in Pawtucket

While the Providence pavilion is centered on Portugal’s national team and Portuguese culture, Rhode Island’s World Cup celebrations also extend to Cabo Verde.
Pawtucket will host a send-off celebration for the Cabo Verde National Team on Sunday, June 7, from noon to 5pm, at Centreville Bank Stadium, recognizing Cabo Verde’s historic first World Cup appearance and the strong Cabo Verdean community in Rhode Island.
Cabo Verde is a separate national team from Portugal, but the two countries share Portuguese language and history, and both have deep cultural ties in Rhode Island.
Their World Cup base is in Tampa, Florida, where it will train at Waters SportsPlex before opening group play against Spain in Atlanta on June 15.
Event Highlights will include
- Appearance by Cabo Verde “Blue Sharks” National Team
- Interstate Tournament featuring Cabo Verdean soccer leagues
- Performances of Cabo Verde and United States national anthems
- Traditional Cabo Verdean music and dance
- Official remarks from community leaders and event partners
- Trophy presentation by members of the Cabo Verde National Team
- Community celebration recognizing Cabo Verdean culture and heritage
