“A Providence for All”: David Morales running for Mayor. “Will make Providence a true Sanctuary City”

Representative David Morales announced his campaign for Mayor of Providence. He will have a birthday fundraiser, TODAY, September 16, 2025 at Narragansett Brewery (271 Tockwotton Street, Providence, RI 02903) from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  He released a launch video, below – and a new website, here: davidmoralespvd.com.

Morales currently represents District 7 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, covering the neighborhoods of Mt. Pleasant, Valley, and Elmhurst. Since being elected in 2020, David has passed progressive legislation to expand healthcare coverage to every child regardless of immigration status, cap the monthly cost of insulin and specialty prescription drugs, extend utility shut-off protections, raise the minimum wage towards $17/hr, and increase state funding for Providence Public Schools.

Highlighting Providence as “the least affordable city in America for renters,” David introduced his campaign slogan, “A Providence for All.” His launch video and website outline plans to tackle the affordability crisis by stabilizing housing costs for renters and homeowners, improving public transportation, protecting our immigrant communities, requiring the wealthiest property owners to contribute their fair share, and ending bad city contracts. Collectively, these priorities reflect David’s vision for a Providence all our neighbors can afford.

In his new website Morales outlines his position on some issues, says he “is running for Mayor to build a city rooted in joy, justice, and affordability, a Providence that puts people over profits”

Morales supports a variety of progressive issues, and other issues such as raised sidewalks, better RIPTA service, stabilization and reduction of rents, and increased housing opportunities.

Providence, a Sanctuary City

On immigration, Morales says he “will protect all our immigrant neighbors by adopting an official sanctuary ordinance, being openly transparent about ICE sightings in our city, and empowering community organizations, like AMOR and ONA, that are on the ground supporting impacted families”. He goes on to say that he “will make Providence a true Sanctuary City. That means putting an official Sanctuary Ordinance in place and strengthening the Community Safety Act so there is no confusion: Providence Police will not collaborate with ICE. Our Providence schools, places of worship, health facilities and courts will not grant access to their premises to any federal immigration authority. Providence deserves leadership that will protect every family by standing up against raids and intimidation. Our city belongs to all of us, and we will not allow fear to divide us.”

Morales does not address how he would address an end to federal funding for being designated a Sanctuary City.
