Providence College Welcomes Students Back to Campus – with Service to the Community

Urban Action and Move-In Day Take Place Next Week

Over 80 members of the Providence College Class of 2029 will begin their college careers the week of August 25 by participating in the College’s annual Urban Action community service program. First-year students will join upperclassmen leaders and volunteers to beautify parks and neighborhood streets, as well as assist education officials at a nearby elementary schools with classroom preparation.

Urban Action

The students will work during the following dates and times:

  • Sunday, August 24: Smith Hill Cleanup; Street clean up
  • Monday, August 25: Pleasant Valley Parkway, Providence; Stormwater clean-up
  • Tuesday, August 26: St. Augustine School, 635 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence; St. Pius V School, 449 Elmhurst Avenue, Providence; and Veazie Street Elementary, 211 Veazie Street, Providence – school clean up and organization for the start of classes
  • Wednesday, August 27: Federal Hill House – Restoration, painting, and community garden work

Urban Action was initiated by PC students in 1991, with 17 students volunteering in the first year. Since then, more than 3,000 first-year students have participated, with many returning as leaders of the program. The goal of the program is to provide incoming students with an opportunity to make a positive difference in the community that will be their “home away from home” for the next four years.

First Year Move-In Day

On Thursday, August 28, Providence College students will begin returning to campus and new first-year students will move in to prepare for the start of the 2025-2026 academic year. Classes for undergraduate, graduate, and School of Continuing Education (SCE) students begin on Tuesday, September 2.

One thousand, one hundred, eighty-eight (1,188) first year students are being welcomed to campus. There are six hundred seventy-seven (677) women and five hundred eleven (511) men. They come from 34 states, the District of Columbia, and fourteen countries including Australia, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Denmark, Russia, and Switzerland.  The most popular majors for the Class of 2029 are finance, marketing, management, nursing, health sciences, biology, psychology, and political science. Ten percent (10%) of those enrolled are first-generation college students. The Class of 2029 is joined this semester by eighty-five (85) transfer students, the largest number in recent history.
