Market Basket coming to Johnston – first store in Rhode Island
Market Basket, a Massachusetts based supermarket chain will open its first Rhode Island store in 2021 in Johnston. The news was announced today by Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena and Market Basket President/CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.
The new store will be located at 1300 Hartford Avenue, the original site of BJ’s, which moved to 200 Stone Hill Road in Johnston in 2012.
“I am very happy and excited that Market Basket has decided to put their first store in Johnston. It is a perfect fit for the company and our great town,” Polisena said.
Demoulas said, “We appreciate the many Rhode Island shoppers who support our Market Basket stores located just over the Massachusetts border and are excited that now they will have a much more convenient location to shop and call their own,” he said.
The privately-owned chain founded in 1917 and has approximately 80 stores in New England. The family’s founders were Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas, who immigrated from Kalambaka, Greece and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Having been familiar with farming and agriculture from his homeland, Athanasios begins to cultivate crops and tend livestock.
