Ron & Jen’s Great Escape, May 17, 2023 – Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien
by Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien, commentary
Onward through the FOG
Many of you know this about me, but still many others don’t. I am in recovery after 38 years of partying and hard core drinking. I was never a good drunk and always passed out in high school and my friends had to deal with me. One night I woke up in a pile of filthy trash bags out in the garage on South Main St where I grew up. It was Final Four weekend. Guess I had one too many. After the sexual assault that lasted a year in the service, my drinking changed. I became a hardcore binge drinker. Suffice it to say my life was destroyed. I had undiagnosed PTSD which would ravage my life until 2017, the year I went to a trauma program in Cincinnati. That place saved my life.
I mention this today because after 5+ years sober now I’m awake and see things as they are, not as I wanted them to be, OR THOUGHT they were. I see people, their motives, the lies, the BS, the games… I also see the good people, the quiet down to earth folks who just want a slice of PEACE. The ones that have a deep concern for this planet and our well being and want to help in some way. It’s a real trip to be awake. Out of that coma. I missed a lot. Last week I posted on FB that I was tired of playing a game. Waking up and leaving the house with a “game face” on is not how it’s supposed to be, but that is how the majority of people roll these days.
I suppose, though I haven’t said much yet in this column, I’m trying to say – wake up! Now more than ever this place we live in needs people who are clear, level-headed, decent, hard working and kind to get things back on track. If you have been pressed down into a coma over the last 3 years, I don’t blame you, but it’s time to come out of it. It can be very painful to see things as they are and people as they are, but if we don’t take that step back into reality, the things we believe in, the goodness and sanity around us may disappear forever. You were made for such a time as this. BELIEVE THAT. It’s no mistake you’re reading this and you’re alive right now. I hope you heed the call here and wake up.
I woke up just in the nick of time. I hope you do too.
Till next week my friends,
Jen
___
Little Appetite For Electric Cars
Seems like Americans aren’t quite ready to give up their gas guzzlers. The percentage of Americans who are very unlikely to buy an electric vehicle as their next car has grown from 17% to 21% over the last 5 months. Why the bounce up? Three reasons; the price, the lack of charging stations, and charging time.
___
SCATTERED GRAY MATTER
A series of studies of Americans aged 18-65 tested how people responded to advertisement they see. One group simply looked at the ad, another group had to memorize a number then look at the ad, the third scrolled Instagram first. The results? People who used Instagram first were more likely to buy the product advertised. This could be because of cognitive overload. Social media use can leave users feeling scattered and less likely to make thoughtful choices.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOBI
Guinness World Records has named Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, the world’s oldest dog – at age 31. Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa, threw the hound a “very traditional” Portuguese birthday party at his digs in Conqueiros, a rural village in southern Portugal. Bobi also holds the record for the oldest dog ever.
