Allan Fung “once in a lifetime opportunity” says Minority Leader McCarthy

US Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Minority Leader, was in Rhode Island to help the campaign of former Mayor Allan Fung, who is running for Congress in District 2 for Rhode Island. Fung is the unopposed Republican candidate for the office.
McCarthy attended a fundraising event in Jamestown, held with or by a member of the Tasca (car) family. While it is not unusual to see national political figures stump in Rhode Island to bolster or launch political campaigns, McCarthy was unusual in taking the time for one long-form interview, with NBC10’s Gene Valicenti – and to then promote his time in Rhode Island – and for Allan Fung – on his social media pages.
Some local media have followed up on the presence of McCarthy in Rhode Island with reports that it may be a “double-edged sword” for Fung as McCarthy is closer to the Trump-factor, as Fung works to distance himself from the extremes of the party, while still being a strong Republican party supporter. Fung is not commenting on, nor has reposted the social media posts of McCarthy’s visit.
Local candidates were quick to also speak or send out press releases negatively about Fung and McCarthy’s visit.
Valicenti continued his week of breaking news, first with the announcement of COSTCO coming to Cranston, and then with the exclusive sit-down with McCarthy – “a pretty big ‘get’ for him – Gene proves he’s a heavyweight in the market over and over again”, per one media critic.
A poll done by the Boston Globe, believed to be the most recent showed Fung would lead Seth Magaziner, if he were the Democratic candidate by 45% to 39%. 17% were undecided.
McCarthy spoke about the campaign, exclusively, to Valicenti, describing the opportunity to put a Republican Congressman back in Washington as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”. He also went on to say that “not only am I coming here today, but we’re going to be here for the next 94 days to make sure he gets across the district…”.
The interview – which can be accessed by clicking on the link below, goes on to talk about Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, the recession, crime, defunding the police, in America, abortion, and other issues.
Democratic candidates facing a primary for Congress, District 2 are: Omar Bah, Joy Fox, Seth Magaziner, Sarah Morgenthau and David Segal.
