Improving childhood literacy focus of Providence Rotary’s 26 community grants

Providence Rotary Charities Foundation awards $114,000 to 26 community agencies and Childhood Literacy Initiative

The Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, charitable arm of the Rotary Club of Providence, has awarded grants totaling $114,000 to 26 nonprofit agencies serving children in and around the city and to its signature Childhood Literacy Initiative.

“Our two-pronged giving strategy is aimed at providing meaningful support to smaller agencies offering a variety of specialized services to Providence area children, and supporting innovative literacy education programs in the Providence Public Schools,” said Janet A. Feyler, chairwoman of the foundation, and Holly B. Applegate, president of the club. “This focus on the needs of children has been the club’s philanthropic mission for most of its 111-year history.”

The Childhood Literacy Initiative donated $65,000 to fund a comprehensive digital library for use in all the city’s middle schools and targeted literacy support and measurement tools for students, primarily those reading below grade level, at Harry Kizirian Elementary School.

Representatives of many of the nonprofit agencies receiving grants from the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, celebrated at a meeting of the Providence Rotary Club.

“We are proud to award these 26 not-for-profit organizations, whose programs enrich the lives of underserved children in and around Providence, a total of $49,000,” said Feyler.
