TODAY: Barrington Books features RI author Brian Power: “A Chance to Serve. A Memoir”

Brian Power, author of “A Chance To Serve” will be a featured author guest TUESDAY, MAY 10th at 6:30pm at Barrington Books, County Road, in Barrington, Rhode Island

Power’s new book is a memoir of Lt. Col. Brian Power, after over a quarter century career with the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve, on this, the 246th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

Lt. Col. Power vividly recalls a wide range of experiences from Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina; to infantry training at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina; to Officer training at Quantico, Virginia. He gives us the pros and the cons from his tour as a young lieutenant in Japan, to his Reserve experiences as a junior infantry officer, to his recall to Active Duty to attend the prestigious Naval War College in Newport, to his final tour at the Pentagon where he again had been recalled to Active Duty for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

His reminiscences reflect and magnify the core values (Honor, Courage, Commitment) that the Marines are taught. Power weaves an engrossing tale of intriguing characters occupied with military events and highlights by his sometimes joyous and hilarious experiences. Power dedicates his book to “all who serve and have served honorably in our armed forces”. He says, “while my service had its share of disappointments, over all it was a fantastic adventure. If I could leave out a couple of things, I’d gladly do it all over again. This has been the story of a journey that took me from a college boy’s dissipation and an unfocused future to a world of some amazing adventures and opportunities for education and accomplishment. It was a chance to serve.”

Power retired in 1993 after a successful training and consulting firm that provided leadership, team building, and problem solving services to small to medium sized companies in the Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts area. He also taught humanities courses such as Human Relations in the Workplace, Introduction to Film, The Automobile and American Culture, Leadership, and Ethics to students at New England Institute of Technology. Power played in the Rhode Island Men’s Senior Baseball League. He is an inductee in the RIMSBL Hall of Fame. He is also an avid golfer. An amateur guitarist, over the past 12 years he has recorded five CD’s of an eclectic range of music including Blues, Rock, Folk, New Age, and Vintage Pop.

Power is also the author of “Song of Atlantis”, a novel about a discovery about a way to harness the earth’s forces into an infinite source of clean energy, that seems destined to change civilization as we know it. “A Chance to Serve” is published by Stillwater River Publications.
