“Ron & Jen’s Great Escape” – 2-9-2022 – Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien
by Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien, commentary
SURGING SUPER BOWL MENU
Like anything else these days, be prepared to spend WAY MORE on your Super Bowl party menu. A new report says inflation will drive the typical Super Bowl snacks up between 8 and 14%. You can likely still pull off a nice seven layer dip for about the same as a year ago, but meats, seafood and soda will run you higher. The ever popular chicken wings will run you 14% higher for bone-in and 26% higher for boneless. Guac and wings are the most popular BIG GAME foods. The National Chicken Council (yes, there IS such an organization) says Americans will eat over 1.4 BILLION wings on Super Bowl Sunday.
ROLL THOSE BONES
The American Gaming Association says an estimated 31.5 million Americans will wager some $7.6 billion dollars on the Super Bowl. And you can place a bet on some bizarre Novelty Prop Bets, including how long it’ll take Mickey Guyton (WHO? thanks, Google)… What color will the Gatorade be poured on the winning Head Coach… the number of commercials featuring dogs…and will Snoop Dog smoke on stage during the halftime show? (CLICK)
THE PEACOCK’S SMILING… FOR ONE DAY
NBC Universal says ALL the commercial inventory in THE BIG GAME is sold out with 30-second spots going for a record $7 million bucks a pop. It’s a nice one day haul but only puts a dent in the amount of $ the network is likely to lose on the Winter Olympics with viewership a total bust.
THE GREAT DAY OF GUILT
You’ll barely be getting over your BIG GAME hangover when the great day of guilt arrives. Yup, Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl are back to back! Valentine’s Day. When your significant other SWEARS they don’t want any kind of a gift… not even a card… and you naively believe such an utterance only to get a frozen stare as you wind up in the doghouse…Do yourself a favor and CYA.
GIVE FROM THE HEART
A new Lending Tree survey says Americans on average will spend $208 bucks on Valentine’s Day this year, up a whopping 44% from last year. If you’re going the candy route, CandyStore.com says Heart Shaped Boxes of Chocolates are the most popular in 17 states with 20 others having them in second or third. As for Rhode Island (along with Maine and Montana), chocolate hearts rank number one.
