Your RI Weather Today, Jan. 28, 2022 – John Donnelly
by John Donnelly, meteorologist
A weak cold front will do little more than reinforce the cool air in place and provide a base for the upcoming storm to utilize.
We’ll see the first action from the storm later on in the evening with the first flakes drifting down around 9 pm. Conditions will quickly turn south with snow intensity and winds beginning to accelerate after midnight.
In the meantime, we’ll have a cloudy and uneventful Friday with morning lows in the mid 20’s and afternoon highs in the low 30’s with a light westerly breeze. Time enough to prepare for what could turn out to be a blizzard.
First educated guess for the storm will be about a foot in the greater Providence area, more outside of the 295 snow belt, and southeastern Mass taking in on the chin with 2 feet or more expected.
Notably, the NWS has issued a blizzard warning.

John Donnelly was born in Hialeah, Florida and moved back to Rhode Island and settled in Johnston, where he grew up until graduating from Lyndon State College in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. As a child John always wanted to know how air moved, and he ran towards, not away from, thunder and lighting and various other ominous weather phenomena. He returned in 2001 to the old family neighborhood of Elmhurst where the McCabe’s, Donnelly’s, Walker’s and Callan’s have been since after the Civil War.
