“Discover Beautiful Rhode Island” – it works beautifully – Nancy Thomas, Jason Michalski
by Jason Michalski, photographer & Nancy Thomas, publisher
“You need to come out and visit our beautiful town of Newport, Rhode Island…”
As Rhode Island opens up, slowly, slowly, the beauty from this special place calls out to each of us.
Editor’s Note: No more perfect slogan for Rhode Island than “Discover Beautiful Rhode Island “- in these post-pandemic times, we need to grab what we have and run with it. No wasting money on new slogans, tearing down signs, and putting up new ones. We have a perfectly good slogan – and visual look. No data shows that changing it would increase one thing in tourism and economic development. Don’t drink the kool-aid that if we run focus groups and produce new words, and print new things – all for millions of dollars – that it will mean we have done ONE thing to move forward. It’s busy work. And Rhode Island needs to stop it. We’ve been there – done that.
Let’s embrace what we have and put the work in on other things to draw people to our state. (Just like our license plates, they’re just fine, make them fresh, pop the color if you want, but our beautiful blue wave is subtle and classy and fits right in with Discover Beautiful Rhode Island – so let’s refresh people’s crumbling plates that need replacing – and move on). We can see beautiful “Discover Beautiful Rhode Island” banners and flags (there’s a new idea) waving proudly over li’l Rhody. We survived – we are still right here – we’re open for business – let’s do it!
The daffodil is also called a Narcissus. The exact origin of the name Narcissus is unknown, but it is often linked to a Greek word for intoxicated, “narcotic”. Narcissus is a figure from Greek mythology who was so impossibly handsome that he fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water. The English word “daffodil” appears to be derived from asphodel, with which it was commonly compared. How handsome is (s)he!

Hi Nancy, Yes, I agree with you and support your train of thought. One other thought though, just as an alternative position, and in the vein of not spending (much) more money on a re-brand is; possibly sticking with another slogan we already have: America’s First Resort. This slogan, and its story of how the first two-week vacation in US history was taken on our shores in 1524, is something we own and no amount of money could buy it. Time to (re)capitalize on it?
