Winners: 30th Annual Fakes & Forgeries Exhibition, Spring Bull Gallery, Newport

Spring Bull Gallery in the heart of Newport is pleased to announce Award Winners in its 30th Annual Fakes and Forgeries Exhibition on view through February 27 at the Gallery, located at 55 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Prizes were selected by gallerist and art historian Michael Rose. Conceived 30 years ago as a fun way to hone artists’ skills, Spring Bull Gallery’s popular exhibit Fakes and Forgeries has become an annual winter tradition in Newport. It provides an opportunity for both new and experienced artists from throughout the region to challenge themselves to reproduce artwork by one of their favorite masters. Artists may submit either a faithful reproduction or choose to submit a parody of the original.

Honorable Mention, Boats at Sea, Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer after Vincent Van Gogh by Christine Belanger

Honorable Mention, Mona Lisa after Leonardo da Vinci by Alison Dale
Prizewinning works were selected by Awards Judge Michael Rose. Rose is an art historian, gallerist, and art appraiser, who since 2014 has served as the Gallery Manager at the historic Providence Art Club. He earned his BA in art history from Providence College and his Certificate in Art Appraisal from New York University. On selecting prizewinners in the show, Michael said “It was both fun and difficult to choose just eight awards in this exhibition. There are so many talented artists included and they all created works that honor their historical inspirations while expressing their respective personalities.”

About Spring Bull Gallery:
In 1990 six men and women decided to open a new cooperative art gallery at the corner of Spring and Bull Streets in the seaside resort city of Newport, Rhode Island. The Gallery/Studio went by the name “Spring Bull”. Since moving to its present location, 55 Bellevue Avenue in December 1994, the cooperative has grown to include 15 artists. The philosophy of the gallery has been not only to provide fine art for the serious collector but to encourage a “user-friendly” approach for those individuals new to art collecting who may otherwise be intimidated by making art selections. Visitors are encouraged to visit as often as they wish, look as long as they like and to ask questions concerning an artist or a particular piece of work.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
