Warwick’s McDermott Pool opens after repairs. Lifeguard need limits schedule.
by Nancy Thomas, RINewsToday
They’re back in the swim in Warwick. Missing the month of July for summertime swim, and $100,000 later, the pool has had malfunctioning pipes and systems fixed – and along with a commitment to keep up a regular maintenance schedule, Mayor Frank Picozzi cut the red ribbon that opened the pool..
This “indoor” pool is lined by both side walls that open like garage doors, giving the appearance, climate and breeze – of being fully outdoors.
As Monday’s press conference was about to start people were already in the pool – some swimming in the lap lane and others looking like they were waiting for an aerobics class to start.
One lifeguard on duty, Eva Scott-Sheldon, is a senior at Bay View Academy, thinking about a major in Biology in college. It was her first day at the pool.
The city is still recruiting for lifeguards, but the Mayor noted that when Warwick’s waterfront swimming areas close, those lifeguards can come to the pool to work. When asked if, as in Pawtucket, Warwick police and fire were pitching in by becoming lifeguards themselves, the Mayor said they had not at this point, but might be asked.
The pool opens with temporary hours which could change as lifeguards are recruited.
The hours include times for adults open and lap swim – and children to swim – and accommodates different times of days and days of the week.
Cutting the ribbon was Mayor Picozzi, with staff and young people from the Trudeau Center, gathered local officials, and Bev Wiley, head of Warwick Recreation.
