US Census results: RI’s 2 Representatives are – SAFE!
With a few reporters from outside the New England area remarking on how Rhode Island was widely expected to lose one seat in the house due to our population decrease, the US Census results showed differently.
The US, taken as a whole, showed 7 states losing 1 representative and 6 states gaining 1, plus Texas gaining 2. So, it’s equal – the map, below shows the states with changes:
Apportionment is the process of distributing the 435 memberships, or seats, in the U.S. House of Representatives among the 50 states based on the apportionment population counts from the 2020 Census. The apportionment population consists of the resident population of the 50 states, plus the overseas military and federal civilian employees and their dependents living with them who could be allocated to a home state.
What this means for 2022 mid-terms:
5 states that voted Democrat (Biden) will lose seats in the House, as opposed to only 2 Republican (Trump) states.
Democrats narrowly control Congress.
States gaining seats are Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon and Texas.
States losing seats are California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. , but Republicans have unified control of the congressional redistricting process in 18 states as opposed to 7 for the Democrats.
“The electoral shifts reflect the decade’s broad population shifts: slow growth in the Northeast and Midwest, and gains in the South and some Western states. The South grew 10.2%, more than twice the rate of the Northeast or the Midwest. U.S. growth fell from 9.7% in the previous decade and was the slowest since a gain of 7.3% in the 1930s.” (Wall Street Journal)
The 2020 Census is released in portions – the release began by an introduction with Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo. Details are searchable by state at https://www.census.gov.
