Truckers join Law Enforcement for 5th Annual Torch Run Truck Convoy for Special Olympics
Rhode Island’s Truckers Join Law Enforcement for Fifth Annual Torch Run Truck Convoy to Benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island
Event coincides with the kick-off of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week
On Sunday, September 15th, nearly 70 trucks from over thirty trucking companies took part in Rhode Island’s fifth Torch Run Truck Convoy® for Special Olympics.
Co-hosted by Special Olympics Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Trucking Association and various municipal and state enforcement agencies, the convoy began at the IGT Headquarters parking lot in West Greenwich led by a police escort, drove up Route 295 North to Route 146, and returning through Providence to West Greenwich via Route 6, Route 295 and Route 95 South. Special Olympics athletes made the call for driver to roll at 9:00am and, after looping the state, participants enjoyed complimentary full breakfast.
“Today was a perfect day to kick-off National Truck Driver Appreciation Week to showcase our industry’s pride and professionalism in support of a great cause,” said Chris Maxwell, President of the Rhode Island Trucking Association. “We’re grateful to all who participated and made this year’s event a success including the drivers, their families and the businesses who own the trucks.”
An international awareness and fundraising event, the Truck Convoy® is a unique partnership between law enforcement and truckers to raise funds for Special Olympics so athletes can continue to train in year-round sports and health-related activities. All proceeds raised by today’s convoy will go to Special Olympics Rhode Island and enable Rhode Island athletes to train and compete free of charge.
