To Do in RI: Opening of Newport Spring Park TODAY
Opening of the Newport Spring Park will take place today, Saturday, June 1st at 11am. Located at the corner of Touro Street and Spring Street, Spring Park is a site of national, state and city significance.
Spring Park reclaims the grounds where religious freedom, tolerance and American secular government shaped the founding of Newport in 1639 around a natural spring that is now protected by this park. This public-private project began ten years ago to improve the colonial heart of Newport, protect one of the nation’s earliest known public water works, and promote the values of religious freedom and the separation of church and state.
The Aquidneck Land Trust will hold a conservation easement on the park that will be maintained in accordance with its land stewardship practices and the City’s Tree, Park and Open Space Master Plan. Spring Park will be the 100th property permanently protected by the Land Trust. As such, there is much to celebrate!
