Senior Agenda Coalition of RI 2023 Annual Conference To Spotlight “The Politics of Aging”

By: Maureen Maigret

The Politics of Aging is the theme for the 15th Annual Senior Agenda Coalition Conference and Expo to be held October 10th from 7:45am to 12 noon at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, RI.

David N. Cicilline, President and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation, and former Member of Congress, will deliver the keynote address.

The Conference will include two issue-oriented panels.

The first panel, “Housing Affordability, Access and Options” will include Stefan Pryor, Secretary of the RI Department of Housing; Representative June Speakman, Chair of the Special Legislative Commission to Study Housing Affordability and Brenda Clement, Executive Director of Housing Works RI.

The second panel, “Issues, Action and Advocacy for Older Rhode Islanders” will feature Office of Healthy Aging Director Maria Cimini; Maureen Maigret, Chair of the Long-Term Care Coordinating Council’s Subcommittee on Aging in Community and Representative Lauren Carson, Chair of the Special Commission to Study State Programs for Older Rhode Islanders.

The Conference begins at 7:45am with a full buffet Breakfast.

The Expo will showcase over three dozen exhibitors of services and products aimed at older adults.

Cindy Coyne, Executive Director of the Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island, notes that by 2030 one out of every five Rhode Islanders will be age 65 and over. “Issues relating to aging and the concerns and contributions of older adults demand the attention of State policymakers,” said Coyne. “The Conference will explore some of those issues. Politics involves making decisions about good public policy and allocating resources to support these policy changes. The voices of our seniors must be heard loudly so these issues remain prominent on the agendas of our elected officials.”

I would like to discuss the SACRI positions on such items as state legislative bills proposing Social Security tax exemption and changes to the RI pension reductions such as the COLA. Last session the Sr. Agenda said “no comment” to these serious issues affecting RI elders.

I am the founder and current treasurer of the RI Minority Elder Task Force, Inc., a more than 30 year 501(c) (3) organization assisting low-income RI elders as well as a founder of the Senior Agenda and am distressed at the refusal to engage in these issues. I hope to hear from you.
