AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME

With less than six weeks to go before the general election, you can expect a blitzkrieg  of  TV political ads… hard to imagine a bigger bombardment than what we’ve already suffered through.  Public matching funds have opened to stuff even more dough into political campaigns. The race for Governor has expectedly gone negative with Governor Dan McKee and his GOP opponent Ashley Kalus dropping ash cans on each other. Kalus’ performance on Ch 12’s NEWSMAKERS program last weekend was less than stellar. It’ll be interesting to see how the political newbie fares on the debate stage against the veteran McKee. Ch 12 has a debate between the two scheduled for October 11th.

PUMPKIN SPICE… NOT EVERYTHING’S NICE

What started off with Pumpkin Spice Lattes and coffees in the fall has developed into a conga line of pumpkin spice products over the years. While some are welcome additions, others are just plain GROSS…. Let’s take a look:

– Pumpkin Spice Dog Treats from Milk-Bone. Does your dog REALLY crave such biscuits?  We give this one a big PAWS DOWN.

– Pumpkin Spice Spam – People either love or hate the “meat product”. Someone within the Spam brain trust thought it would be even more appealing (or flat out disgusting) in a pumpkin spice flavor.

– Pumpkin Spice Gum – Big pumpkin spice fans can now have the flavor in their mouths all day long wherever they go. Simply Gum’s pumpkin spice chewing gum is an all natural product featuring pumpkin, nutmeg, and clove.

– Pumpkin Spice Protein Powder and Shakes – nothing better after a brisk workout than cannon balling one of these beauties.

WHAT’S IN  A NAME?

President Biden hosted the World Champion Atlanta Braves at the White House this week. During the celebration, Biden paid tribute to the team, the late great Hank Aaron and the team’s history. The President had no problem saying “Braves” many times. In a bizarre timing twist (and this administration certainly has had MANY of those) just a few hours later, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre encouraged the Braves to have a “conversation” about changing the team’s nickname. The team has carried the name Braves since 1912 when it played in Boston. Apparently, a reporter asked Jean-Pierre how Biden felt about the “tomahawk chop” fans perform at Atlanta homes games. That’s when she brought up a possible name change. We ask what exactly is offensive about the name, Braves? What was offensive about the nickname “Indians” that Cleveland jettisoned to become the (lame name) “Guardians”?  Are native Americans and indigenous people REALLY outraged by all this?

THE PRO BOWL IS NO MORE

The football game nobody gave a rat’s patoot about has now become just a memory. The NFL Pro Bowl, the league’s version of an all star game, has been put out of its (actually, ours, and players alike) misery. The league will now try to milk a week-long “all-star showcase” out of it instead. Rebranded as “The Pro Bowl Games”, it will culminate with a flag football game between the AFC and NFC . Before that, the week will feature skills competitions and what the league calls “other events.” The Pro Bowl games will start February 5th in Las Vegas. Note to the NFL: NOBODY will care about this either.
