Ron & Jen’s Great Escape – 10-26-22 – Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien

by Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien, commentary

You probably think this column is about you

Right now, we live in a world where everyone wants to be seen, in any way, for everything. Good and Bad. People show us pics on FB of them in the hospital, on the can, in love, out of love, drunk, sober, healthy, shooting dope, preaching, crying, playing, fighting… and some, actually live feed the birth of their children. Dang.

Why do people think we need to see ALL THAT, or want to? Moreover, why do the vast majority of the people on Facebook think they’re interesting enough for us to care? The occasional picture of a happy time, purchase, new haircut, celebration, WE get and receive. That’s NORMAL, but the selfie obsession, the long LONGGGGGGG posts about very personal issues, the updates for sympathy time and time and time again, are so insane and represent a culture, or “TYPE” of person that wants to be seen, no matter how or why. It’s all around us, and I do understand that this generation was born into the KARDASHIAN CURSE: “LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME SOME MORE, OR I’LL BECOME IRRELEVANT”, but ADULTS behave like 15 year olds on FB and it’s simply confounding. The other day I read a post about a man who broke up with his 15th girlfriend in 4 months and he was moaning and carrying on like he was in high school saying he will never find true love, while sitting in his mom’s kitchen totally stoned, and claiming he hasn’t worked in 2 years. Gee, I dunno, maybe if you put the bong down, got a job, and showered, your luck would change. No, this 59-year-old guy was pleading for attention and claimed he was a victim. Another “friend” of mine on FB continues to claim she’s sick when she’s not, and says, “I just don’t understand why EVERY doctor I go see finds nothing”. Gee, I dunno, probably because you’re not really sick, and you just keep posting about phantom illnesses for attention. You can’t say that to these people however; they get “offended”.

Look, fact is, being seen is important if you go on an interview, meeting the parents for the first time if you’re getting married, going for a bank loan… etc., etc… FB? For many people it’s all self idolatry, the need to create a “version” of themselves, or for sympathy.

As for me, the only one I truly care who sees me is God. He’s seen it all! And he still LOVES ME. That’s cool. I figure, at this point in my life why not make him proud every day and live for others, instead of pride.

Till next time my friends,
Jen
P.S I bet you think this post is about you, don’t you… don’t you…?

PINCHING PENNIES… IF YOU HAVE ANY

Feeling the financial pinch? You’re certainly not alone.  As inflation soars with no end in sight, a majority of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. According to a new report from Lending Club, 63% of Americans are struggling to keep up with the pace of inflation. The financial service company says that figure includes 49% of six figure earners. As a result, many Americans have dipped into their savings and retirement funds. Seems being employed is no longer enough for the everyday American, and wage growth has been inadequate. It’ll be interesting to see how big this impacts the mid-term elections right around the bend.

THERE GOES THE JUDGE?

Was Yankee slugger Aaron Judge already referring to his career in the Bronx in the past tense after his team was embarrassed by the Astros who broomed them in a four game sweep? Right after the game he WAS talking about the team, saying, “getting the chance to wear the pinstripes and play at Yankee Stadium was an incredible honor that I didn’t take for granted.” He went on to say playing in front of Yankee fans for six years “was a special time.” Just before the season began, Judge turned down a 7-year/$213 million dollar pitch from the Yankees. That roll of the dice along with a 62 home run season will certainly up the ante for his services this off season. Some have made a lot out of the fact the Yankee fans were actually booing Judge who didn’t do much in the post season, but rest assured those Yankee millions will muffle those Bronx cheers. As for the Red Sox opening their wallet to bring Judge to Fenway….dream on.

ARE THE PHILLIES BAD FOR YOUR 401K?

The Phillies won the 1929 World Series just 2 weeks before Black Friday and the Wall Street Class of 1929. The Phils won in 1980 corresponding with the early 1980 recession. The Phillies won the 2008 Fall Classic which ALSO correlated with what’s known as the Great Recession. I’m not superstitious… BUT GO, ASTROS!
