Answer: In modern conflicts, the battlefield cross typically consists of four main elements:
A rifle, with fixed bayonet, muzzle pointed downward, blade placed into a stand, or sandbag.
A pair of boots, sometimes used to symbolize a service member’s last march.
A helmet placed on top of the rifle’s buttstock.
The dog tags of the fallen service member, hung from the rifle. The method of marking casualties has been used since the civil war. During World War I and World War II, to assist the Graves Registration Service personnel in their solemn duties of identifying and recovering remains. The practice took on a more symbolic meaning during the Korean War.

Battlefield Cross: A Powerful Symbol to Memorialize the Sacrifices of Fallen Soldiers
On Wednesday, the Italian American War Veterans of US hosted the 1st Annual Medal of Honor Dinner at the Rosario Club, Providence, RI. Near the entrance of the hall and next to the table there was a display of PVT George Peters military pictures, letter, and other keepsakes brought by his family.
In addition, on display next to the table, was recently assembled Battlefield Cross; battlefield cross is a symbol memorialize the sacrifices of fallen soldiers.
Although none of the estimated 75 attendees was a comrade of PVT Peters during WWII, and in the battle that cost him his life, more likely than not, leadership of his unit, when the situation permitted during WWII, displayed a Battlefield Cross. Moreover, conducted a formal ritual for members of Peters unit. Such a ritual is for the psychological and emotional well-being of the embattled unit.
The battlefield cross is a temporary monument for a focal point to help service members express their grief. Find closure, and say goodbye to a fallen comrade. “We must never forget those who gave it all,” said one teary eye veteran said standing by the Battlefield Cross on display. Sadly, he told me he was present for 6 Battlefield Cross representing members of his platoon killed in Vietnam.
Although the dinner was to honor the memory of the only WWII recipient from Rhode Island, PVT George Peters, attendees included 4 Rhode Island WWII veterans: Caster Salemi, 101 (soon to be 102), Domenic Giarusso, 101, Louie Dolce (100) , and Roger Desjardins, 99.

Attendees include 30 nephews, nieces, and family/friends of PVT George Peters who was killed in action during World War II. Estimated 30 veterans were in attendance for the dinner. In addition, Jos Bex, who traveled from the Netherlands to Rhode Island to meet members of Pvt. Peters family. Bex presented the Peter’s family were a replica of grave marker on Peters grave at Netherland American Cemetery, Margraten , Netherlands.

One could not miss the table setup of keepsakes of PVT George Peters when entering the Rosario Club for the event. “The letter from President Truman is the citation detailing the actions my Uncle took that earned him the Medal of Honor.”, said his nephew Dave, who has the letter.
“The Italian American War Veterans of US/ Department of Rhode Island will host an annual Medal Of Honor Remembrance every year , on the National Medal of Honor Day on March 25, and or near the date,” said the organization Department Commander of the Italian American War Veterans of US.
Remembering the 5 goodbyes to comrades I served and lost their lives during Operation Iraq Freedom in 2003-2004 and attended the ritual with the BattleField Cross on display with their stuff. Like most of the veterans in attendance, I became teary eye recalling my brothers who gave it all during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Having this annual remembrance is so important to have to tell the stories of the over 300 Rhode island Medal of Honor reciptent, which only 1 remains living.

Free Golf, Goddard Park Golf Course Fee Exemption for Totally Disabled Veterans:
Rhode Island resident Veterans who have a 100% permanent and total, service-connected disability rating from the VA are exempt from paying any fees to play golf at the Goddard Park Golf Course. For more information call the Clubhouse at Goddard Memorial State Park from April 1st through the 3rd Saturday in November at 401-884-9834 or year-round at Division Headquarters at 401-667-6200.
Free Rhode Island Hunting and Fishing Licenses for 100% Disabled Veterans: A Veteran who has a 100% disability rating from the VA is eligible for free Rhode Island hunting and fishing licenses.
No cost licenses are available if you are:
· over 65 AND a Rhode Island resident
· a veteran with 100% disability status from the Department of Veterans Affairs
· a person with 100% total disability status from the Social Security Administration
To apply in person at DEM, please bring a photo ID and an ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. (directions)

The Department will audit compliance with the certification and may, at any time, request a copy of the current DOCUMENT OF THE FINAL DECISION(S). Failure to submit the documentation by the date requested may result in the suspension of your fishing and hunting license. Also, Rhode Island General Law 11-18-1 prohibits giving false documents to an agent, employee, or public official. The penalty is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment up to one year.
Rhode Island Hunting and Fishing Benefits for Service Members and Veterans: Rhode Island offers several hunting and fishing benefits to Service members and Veterans. A short description of each is listed below. Applicants are required to show documentation proving eligibility when they apply:

Free Rhode Island State Park Passes for 100% Disabled Veterans: Rhode Island offers the State Park Disability Pass for use at any state-owned recreational facility to disabled Veterans who have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the VA.
The State Park Disability Pass authorizes free admission and parking but does not exempt the following:
· Licensing fees
· Camping fees
· Picnic table fees
· Specialized facility use fees
· Use of equestrian areas
· Performing art centers
· Game fields fees
· Mule shed fees
If the disabled Veteran cannot drive, the vehicle transporting the Veteran will not be charged.
Veterans must apply in person at the Rhode Island State Parks and Recreation Headquarters and are required to show official documentation (dated within the past year) from the VA that states they have a 100% service-connected disability.

John A. Cianci is a Veteran Service Officer. Retired, U.S. Army MSgt., Persian Gulf War and Iraq War combat theater.
