RI remembers Sept. 11th with events – all those who fly flags join in lowering them
Governor Dan McKee and Lt. Governor Sabina Matos released the following statements to mark the 21st anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001:
“It has been 21 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We mourn the lives that were lost on that morning, including nine of our fellow Rhode Islanders. We also remain steadfast in our commitment to honoring their memory and standing with their families because we know that their loved ones’ courage, like the spirit of this nation, is strong and can never be broken.
We will forever remember the courage we saw on that day – firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, first responders, and everyday Americans banding together in acts of incredible heroism.
We also pay tribute to the courageous service men and women who valiantly protected our nation. To those who gave their lives, we know that there is never a strong enough way to thank them for all they have done.
Our hearts are with everyone, across Rhode Island and the nation, who is grieving,” said Governor Dan McKee.
“Let us recommit ourselves in shared resolve to preserving the memory of those we lost and those who have served and sacrificed for our sake in the years afterwards,” said Lt. Governor Sabina Matos. “It is our sacred duty to ensure that coming generations understand both the tremendous grief and unbreakable national unity evoked by each passing anniversary of September 11th. Today and every day of the year, Rhode Island mourns alongside the families and friends of our dear departed.”
Governor McKee has directed U.S. and Rhode Island flags to remain at half-staff at all state facilities and buildings on Sunday, September 11, 2022. Governor McKee also asks Rhode Islanders to lower their flags as a sign of respect.

The City of Warwick will hold its annual remembrance ceremony Sunday, September 11th at the 9/11 Memorial in Oakland Beach to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The ceremony will begin at 10:28 am with a moment of silence to observe the time when the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
Warwick’s Police and Fire Honor Guard will be in attendance, as well as Warwick students who will recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem. Invocation and Benediction will be offered by Father Marciano.
Mayor Frank Picozzi, and Representative Camille Vella-Wilkinson will be joined by the Warwick City Council, and members of the House and Senate. Families of Rhode Islanders who lost their lives in the attacks will also be at Sunday’s ceremony.

On Sunday morning, September 11th at 8:30am, the State of Rhode Island will hold its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will be held at the State House to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and the members of our military who have sacrificed their lives.
The event will be held inside the Rhode Island State House, in the Bell Area.
Participating will be: Governor Dan McKeeMajor General Christopher P. Callahan, Adjutant General, Rhode Island National GuardColonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent, Rhode Island State PoliceKasim Yarn, Director, Rhode Island Office of Veterans Services.

RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, 9 a.m. — The American Legion, Marine Corps League and other groups will gather at the columbarium for the annual event will feature raising the nearby flags to half-staff, the citing of those Rhode Islanders who were lost on that day and whose names are inscribed on a plaque at the State House along with the “Ringing of the Four.”

Burrillville – 9 a.m. — At the Firefighter’s Memorial Park. Memorial service where the names of the initial 343 firefighters who perished in the line of duty will be read to commemorate the anniversary of Sept. 11th.

The RI Jeep Wave – 6 p.m. — 3nd annual “Under the Lights” to remember those who died on 9/11. The ride will start at Exeter-West Greenwich Regional High School and end at the Rhode Island State House. All money raised will be donated to the “Never Forget 9/11 Foundation.”

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of Lives Lost
All Rhode Islanders who fly the US flag are asked to do so at half-staff throughout this day – joining the U.S. and Rhode Island flags in a sign of respect.
