Plant sale today at Westbay Farm, Warwick
Today, Saturday, May 29th, Westbay Farm will hold its annual plant sale. There will be vegetable starts, flowers, and herbs for sale. Some greens and rhubarb will also be available. The plants have been grown with organic potting soil and without any pesticides.
Westbay Farm’s Farm Manager is Steve Stycos, former Cranston City Councilman and candidate for Mayor of Cranston. It is a two-acre farm that is part of Westbay Community Action. The farm uses organic methods and provides produce for food pantries. All proceeds from the sale support the farm operation.
The sale is open from 10AM – 1PM at 1351 Centerville Road (Rt 117), Warwick. Some goats and chickens will also be attending. Stycos will be on hand for farm tours, upon request.
The farm grows 15,000 pounds of organic vegetables each year. Its largest crops are lettuce, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and squash.
Westbay Farm provides fresh produce for food pantries. With the help of volunteers, in 2019 the farm provided 23,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables to food pantries in Warwick and Cranston.
The farm provides fresh produce to the Westbay Marketplace food pantry, expanding the nutritious choices for their clients. Farm produce is also available to the public through the Kent Hospital cafeteria (Thursday market) and at special sales.
Westbay Farm is located on the former Barton dairy farm. The City of Warwick owns the land and leases it to Westbay Community Action. The City of Warwick’s Community Development Service Grant and Episcopal Charities provide financial support. The farm could not operate without the dedicated work of many volunteers.
