Recently, Governor Gina Raimondo recommended Angelica Infante-Green to be the new Rhode Island Commissioner of Education. Infante-Green is currently a deputy commissioner of education for the New York Department of Education.
On paper, Infante-Green seems to be the perfect choice for a state with well-publicized educational challenges; particularly challenges which have led to huge disparities among students of color (approximately 45% of all students), English language learners and students with disabilities.
The NAACP Providence Branch, at this time, feels that it is equally as important to have a Commissioner who not only brings impeccable credentials but also one who has walked in the shoes of the students who experience the greatest challenges.
In the selection of Infante-Green, the governor has gotten it right on both scores and the NAACP Providence Branch applauds and supports the recommendation.
