National Truck Driver Appreciation Week: Torch Run Truck Convoy to roll in Rhode Island
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week Kicks off with Torch Run Truck Convoy to Benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island
Seventy trucks are expected to roll out onto Interstate 95 this Sunday morning as part of the Annual Torch Run Truck Convoy® for Special Olympics. The event also coincides with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week that runs from September 10 through September 16 and through which companies all over the country will be taking the time to show their gratitude for their drivers’ dedication.
LOCAL EVENT
Co-hosted by Special Olympics Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Trucking Association, Cardi’s Furniture and various municipal and state enforcement agencies, the convoy will begin at the IGT Headquarters parking lot in West Greenwich led by a police escort, will drive up Route 95 North to Route 295 North and return to West Greenwich via Route 146 South, Route 6 West, Route 295 South and 95 South.
Special Olympics athletes will make the call for drivers to roll at 9:00am on Sunday, and, after looping the state, participants will enjoy a complimentary full breakfast provided by Twins Catering as sponsors are recognized for their support.
An international awareness and fundraising event, the Truck Convoy® is a unique partnership between law enforcement and truckers to raise funds for Special Olympics so athletes can continue to train in year-round sports and health-related activities. All proceeds raised by Sunday’s convoy will go to Special Olympics Rhode Island and enable Rhode Island athletes to train and compete free of charge. In 2022, the event raised $14,000 and this year’s event is expected to eclipse the $20,000 mark.
