Susan Collins of Maine has been in Congress for 29 years and is 73 years old, and yet she had to stop and think whether she could vote for legislation to require that someone seeking to vote in an election must prove citizenship with a photo ID?
Members of a private club vote for their officers, not outsiders; shareholders of a company vote for directors; not the shareholders of some other company ; citizens of a nation (in this case, a democratic republic) direct the affairs of the nation by voting in elections; not citizens of another country and not persons who are in the country illegally or with no standing.
It’s so fundamental. And if you wish to vote, you can get a personal ID. I cannot see any barrier to that for any individual, and the arguments I’ve heard against ID sound like so much hogwash.
Voting has lost its sense of patriotism and importance. If you value something a lot, you’ll take care of what you need to do to do it.
