Photo: from Charlestown Citizens Website
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service with support from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is now offering a FREE Archery day this month. The event will be held on Friday, July 29th, 10am to 1pm at the Kettle Pond Archery Range in Charlestown.
They will be supplying all of the equipment (please do not bring your own). To be able to shoot at the range you must participate in a half hour range safety session prior to the event.
Keep in mind archery is not a sport for everyone, so younger children (8 and under) may not be able to safely shoot a bow and arrow yet. For the younger children we will have nature crafts, puzzles, games and scavenger hunts inside in the visitor center.
Please call to register at 401.364.9124, extension 4413, anytime to register, leave message if after hours.
About Kettle Pond:
Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is one of five refuges of the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This refuge, the former Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility is located in Charlestown, Rhode Island. The glacial ice sheet and former uses have shaped this refuge’s diverse landscape. It is known for its migratory bird species, and its rich history.
The Ocean View Trail, accessible from the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, is a 1/2 mile trail marked by 15,000 year-old ridges and depressions shaped by the great ice sheet. At the end of the trail is a tower where visitors are treated to views of Ninigret Pond, coastal shrublands, barrier beaches, and Block Island. This view ties into the exhibit theme of Kettle Pond Visitor Center, where habitats are “Individually Unique….Ecologically Connected. Same as our partners, programs, and wildlife!
