EPA Excellence Award in Rhode Island goes to Cranston’s Water Pollution Control Facility

The City of Cranston Water Pollution Control Facility has been honored as the recipient of the 2024 EPA Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award for the state of Rhode Island.

This recognition was presented during an awards ceremony held in Boston on January 30, where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) New England Office acknowledged three facilities and individuals across Rhode Island for their dedication to enhancing water quality. For over 40 years, the EPA Regional Wastewater Awards Program has spotlighted personnel in the wastewater sector who have made significant contributions to the management and operation of wastewater treatment facilities throughout New England.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Earl Salisbury, the Cranston Water Pollution Control Facility was commended for its outstanding performance in operating and maintaining the wastewater treatment plant over the past year, earning the distinguished 2024 Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award.

This facility was one of only three in New England, and the only facility in Rhode Island, to receive this accolade. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management played a crucial role in the facility’s nomination.

Cranston Mayor Kenneth J. Hopkins expressed his congratulations to Salisbury and the staff of the city’s water pollution control facility. In his second four-year term, which began in January, the mayor remarked that his administration has “done an admirable job maintaining and improving the operations and plant facilities.” He emphasized the enhanced partnership with Veolia regarding treatment quality and processes, which has been recognized by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM).

“The results of our administration’s investment in infrastructure, coupled with a well-managed internal service fund, are clearly evident in this recognition,” Hopkins said. “Much credit is due to our Department of Public Works staff and the Veolia team.”

Edward Tally, Environmental Program Manager for the City of Cranston’s Department of Public Works, also praised the efforts of Veolia and Salisbury in their roles. Tally noted that Veolia Water has managed the city’s water pollution control facility since the late 1990s.

“Our relationship with the utility company has always been positive; they have been excellent partners, ensuring our compliance,” Tally stated.

The EPA Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award was created to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their unwavering commitment to improving water quality through exceptional operational and maintenance practices.
