Energy assistance still available from the RI Good Neighbor Energy Fund

The Rhode Island Good Neighbor Energy Fund’s sponsoring energy companies and its administrator, United Way of Rhode Island, want to remind local households struggling financially and not eligible for federal or state assistance that the Fund will continue to be available to help with the payment of home energy expenses even in the warmer spring months.

The Fund is a safety net for households in temporary crisis who are having trouble paying their energy bills.  Households in need of energy assistance are encouraged to call their local Community Action Program (CAP) agency to determine if they qualify for the Fund.  Community Action Program agencies help to determine eligibility for the Fund based on total household income not exceeding 300 percent of the federal poverty level.  For example, a household of four is eligible if its annual income does not exceed $90,000 while a household of six cannot exceed $120,840.  Grants to individual households are determined by fuel type and need with grant amounts up to $825 per heating season.

“Although the calendar has flipped to March and spring arrives this month, temperatures remain cold and volatile in Rhode Island and people need to know the Good Neighbor Energy Fund continues to be available to provide assistance,” said Cortney Nicolato, President and CEO, United Way of Rhode Island. “If you’re a household struggling with your energy costs to heat your home or behind on payment and at risk of a shut off, please call 211 to see if you’re eligible for help.”

In addition to the various giving programs of Fund sponsors – Block Island Utility District, Clear River Electric & Water District, Ocean State Power, Petro Home Services, Rhode Island Energy and RISEC LP – the campaign relies on the generosity of individuals, families and local corporations for support.  Rhode Islanders most often donate to the Fund via the donation envelopes that are enclosed with energy bills into March.
