President’s Press Conference

Update on some hospital tents being moved from states who may not need to other states.

Fauci: Public health – returning to some degree of normality – going to be seeing death numbers rise. But we want to focus on # of new cases to see if mitigation is working. Clearly in other countries it works – in Washington state it worked. Most important tool is social isolation. What we are doing is making a difference. We must continue.

Some locations have natural distance; others, like compact cities need broad policies.

Troops will be going to some locations – 1,000 to NYC (medical military)

“The cure cannot be worse than the disease itself”

President had a call with all the major sports team leaders. Can’t give a date but sooner rather than later. Separation won’t be forever. We will be able to sit next to each other. We’re making progress.

Convention end of August in Charlotte – no contingency plans.

Next round of stimulus packages – more money for small businesses. Banks been doing a good job. Restaurants/entertainment/sports leagues, etc. – get tax deductibility for business uses and sports leagues.

President references the Constitution on why US government doesn’t take over a stay at home blanket platform for all states. 92% of the state is doing this.

President says he may take the low-dose anti-malarial – will check with his doctor.

“I don’t care about OPEC” – they will settle their issues.

3 new deaths (1 from Golden Crest) – 97 more cases, 93 total in hospital,

Any RIslander can get tested if they are having symptoms – encouraging people to contact their primary care doctor to get tested.

Cloth-based coverings or masks, should be worn by everyone.

RI will be paying the facilities used for the space for auxiliary hospital beds.

Press Release:

All Rhode Islanders who have symptoms of COVID-19 are urged to call a healthcare provider to coordinate a test. The symptoms of COVID-19 include any of these symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches (myalgias), chills, runny nose or stuffy nose, sore throat, headache, or diarrhea. COVID-19 testing in Rhode Island had previously been limited to the members of certain priority populations who are more vulnerable to complications from COVID-19 or who are members of Rhode Island’s critical infrastructure workforce.

The Governor also announced that starting tonight the State House will be lit red for the next week to honor the first responders on the frontlines of this crisis. 

COVID-19 Data Update

Dr. Alexander-Scott announced today that Rhode Island has 97 new cases of COVID-19. This brings Rhode Island’s count to 806. Dr. Alexander-Scott also announced three additional COVID-19 associated fatalities. Two individuals were in their 80s, and one was in their 90s. One of these individuals was a nursing home resident. That brings Rhode Island’s number of fatalities to 17. A full data summary for Rhode Island is posted online.
