Business Beat: Colin Kane and Edward Broderick honored with Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award

Council Raises a Record-Breaking $405,000 for Scoutreach Program

Outstanding business leaders Colin Kane and Edward Broderick were honored for their contributions to the community by Scouting America, Narragansett Council. The John H. Chafee Distinguished Citizen Award is given to individuals who personify what Scouting stands for – good citizenship, character, a dedication to helping others, and for living the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law.

The 29th Annual Distinguished Citizen Awards Luncheon raised a record-breaking $405,000 for the Scoutreach program, benefiting underserved youth. This year’s event marks over $7.5 million raised for Scoutreach, with a positive impact on more than 25,000 low-income and at-risk youth in the Narragansett Council over the last 29 years.

Co-founder and managing partner of Peregrine Group LLC, honoree Colin Kane’s 26-year career includes leadership on iconic Rhode Island developments including Ocean House in Westerly and Hammetts Wharf in Newport. Colin’s engagement on numerous boards and commissions underscores his dedication to economic development and community growth.

“Receiving the Distinguished Citizen Award is not only a great honor but also a reminder of the values of Scouting,” said Distinguished Citizen Award Honoree Colin Kane. “I admire the Scoutreach program as it reflects the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, lead, and explore.”
President and CEO of Gilbane Development Company, Edward “Ed” Broderick’s 40-year tenure with Gilbane has spanned roles from management trainee to leading the company’s strategic initiatives. His expertise has been pivotal in expanding Gilbane’s multifamily and mixed-use portfolio, particularly in Washington, D.C., and New York City. Ed has led the firm to new heights with his strategic vision and commitment to developing affordable housing projects. Previously serving as President of the Narragansett Council, Ed advocated for the inclusion of girls in all Scouting programs.

“As a father to two Eagle Scouts myself, I am honored by this recognition as it is a testament to the collective effort to uplift our youth through Scouting,” said Distinguished Citizen Award Honoree Ed Broderick. “The Luncheon and the Scoutreach Program are beacons of hope and growth for thousands of Scouts. This award symbolizes our shared commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow and ensuring that the spirit of Scouting is reachable to everyone.”The annual luncheon is held in honor of the late U.S. Senator John H. Chafee, who was a Scout in his youth and a Narragansett Council alumnus. Critical funding for the Council’s Scoutreach Program is raised at the event. For nearly three decades, the Scoutreach Program has been dedicated to ensuring that all youth, regardless of economic barriers, can experience every opportunity offered in Scouting. The program supports over 1,000 Scouts annually with outdoor activities, summer camp, troop meetings, uniforms, equipment and recognition for their achievements.
