COSTCO withdraws “Cranston Crossing” proposal to Council
“The Applicant hereby withdraws the subject Application”. In just those few words, a letter from the attorneys for Coastal Partners, the developer of a proposed COSTCO to be built on the grounds of the existing Mulligan’s Island property in Cranston, the agenda item for tomorrow’s Cranston City Council meeting on ZOOM is no longer applicable.
The withdrawal letter:

Together with the withdrawal letter, the Cranston City Plan Commission submitted a letter to the Cranston Ordinance Committee noting it had voted 6 to 1 on a negative recommendation for the COSTCO plan to go forward.
Cranston City Plan Commission to Ordinance Committee:

The agenda item before the Cranston City Council:

Updated: Reached on Wednesday afternoon, Mayor-elect Ken Hopkins (currently a member of the Cranston City Council) provided this statement: “I am glad that the people’s voice was heard loud and clear. I applaud their efforts. I welcome Costco to look at other locations in our city. It is a great store that can boost our economy with jobs and taxes.”
Pauline DeRosa, founder of the Garden City Alliance commented, “Without the perseverance of the Cranston Neighbors for Smart Development and residents from other nearby communities, the ‘Cranston Crossing’ development may have become a reality. This is a perfect example of what residents can accomplish when they become engaged in the process.”
This is a developing story…

Very bad news for Rhode Ialand. We need a Costco here … BJs does not compare.
Yes Thomas. Costco has a very different demographic base than the other wholesaler. They provide many high quality products and an impressive selection of jobs with outstanding benefits. I’ve been employed with Costco for many years and was looking forward to moving back to Rhode Island, still employed by Costco.
Why doesn’t Costco come to Seekonk, MA and have all the RI customers benefit Seekonk. RI will be the loser.
Why was the Quonsett Lowe’s building not an option?
The only option they considered was the Mulligan’s Island – a few years ago they thought about Chapel View. That’s all we heard.
