Back on TV – Kelly Bates
by Nancy Thomas
Less than a year after a sudden departure from NBC10, Kelly Bates returns to television weather in days. To her Twitter and Instagram friends, she never really left, but the sadness around Kelly Bates, an iconic figure in weather reporting was palpable. Kelly herself seemed to be shocked at the transition she was being forced to make, as well as local fans and even businesses – some who put up signs that said “bring back Kelly”. During these 8 to 9 months of limbo, Kelly used national weather resources to interpret and leave us her local weather updates on Twitter and other social media. It was clear there were cloudy, stormy days for Kelly.
We’ve enjoyed pictures of her cats, adventures with her son, some travel, and the obligatory comment on a crazy weather platform, or celestial happening. We saw pictures of her latest culinary delights, some home repairs, adventures in makeup, and adventures without, even bad hair days.
We hate to break the news to Kelly’s 4 kitties who carefully guard the staircase lest mom slip away to an early morning or late evening work-a-day life again.
So, be careful walking down the stairs, Kelly!
Kelly’s fans will be thrilled to learn she will now be seen as the Weekend Meteorologist for ABC-6 and we applaud them for their decision – they are lucky to have her.
Allison Gaito, News Director, WLNE-TV ABC 6 said, “Southern New Englanders are a pretty particular bunch. So, in creating a newsroom that best fits the needs of our viewers, I have intentionally stuck close to home. Kelly is one of us. She is a pro viewers know and trust and that’s why I am excited to welcome her back to the ABC 6 Stormtrackers team.” And, from Alex Wolf, General Manager, “We are thrilled to have Kelly join the WLNE family and are looking forward to bringing her familiar face back into the homes of Southern New Englanders.” She will be on air the weekend of June 11th. Bates began her career at ABC6.
Bates made a post last night on Twitter: “The story continues… I’m back where I started 22 years ago. Feels great to be home, and it truly feels like home.
As so many said back in September of 2021 – Rhode Islanders love you, Kelly…. congrats on your return.

“Kelly Bates out at NBC10 – on to her next big thing“
Since Kelly left channel 10, I have banned channel 10 news and weather from my TV. I am thrilled this wonderful meteorologist and woman is back on TV on channel. I will enjoy the weather forecasts given by Kelly!
FANTASTIC!!!! When I moved to Westport 20 years ago I throughly enjoyed you wonderful weather reporting and especially you’re genuine down to earth warmth and humor. I felt like I had discovered an old friend in my new town. I was irate when you suddenly disappeared. I am so happy for you (and me) that you are back with us. All the very best to you. see you soon!
Great to see you back
BRAVO KELLY!
Congratulation Kelly, can’t wait to see you back on TV. The Lord closes one door and opens another door. Wishing you God’s blessing as you enter a new phase in your career.
