A call to join the Narragansett Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission
by Tony Jones – Photo: William Knowles Lot, the first historical cemetery recognized in Narragansett
As a member of the Narragansett Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission since 2022, I want to extend an invitation to my fellow Narragansett residents to consider joining this important commission. We are in need of passionate and dedicated individuals who care about preserving our town’s rich history.
Historic cemeteries are vital pieces of our community’s heritage. They tell the stories of the people who shaped our town, from early settlers to those who contributed to the growth and development of Narragansett. Each gravestone, monument, and burial plot holds historical value that offers insight into our past.
By maintaining our historic cemeteries, we ensure that future generations have access to the rich narratives embedded in these landscapes. Whether it’s the artistry of century-old gravestones or the names of those who once lived here, these cemeteries are integral to our collective identity.
The Historical Cemetery Commission works diligently to safeguard these sites, conducting restorations, advocating for preservation, and fostering public awareness. However, we need more dedicated members to continue this important work. If you have an interest in local history, heritage preservation, or simply wish to make a meaningful contribution to the community, we encourage you to apply.
Narragansett residents can apply to join the Historical Cemetery Commission by visiting: https://www.narragansettri.gov/668/Boards-and-Commissions
Help us protect our shared history—your involvement can make a lasting difference.
Thank you!

Dr. Tony Jones, Psy.D., Member, Narragansett Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission
