Rinse & Renew Shower Program sign at MLK Center in Newport offering free showers and services

Homeless in RI: Rinse & Renew Shower Program Returns to Newport’s MLK Center April 14

After a winter hiatus, the Rinse & Renew Shower Program is back— with new improvements.

Following a successful 2025 pilot year, when showers were offered every other week to those in need, strong community support has made it possible to expand the program to a weekly schedule, along with additional services. Beginning Tuesday, April 14, Rinse & Renew will operate every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., continuing through late October.

The need remains significant. A January 2025 statewide count identified 2,373 Rhode Islanders experiencing homelessness, with a growing number living unsheltered. In Newport County, most individuals served—about 87%—have local roots, underscoring the importance of community-based programs like Rinse & Renew.

The annual Point-in-Time count provides only a snapshot—and many say it underestimates the true scope of homelessness. On the ground, service providers continue to see growing need, particularly among those living unsheltered.

This season brings new partnerships and expanded care to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center (MLK Center) program . Teams from Alert Healthcare and Westbay Community Action will be on site each week to assess and treat injuries, adding an important layer of health support for participants. Clients will also have the opportunity to schedule professional haircuts during their visit.

As always, the program provides fresh towels and essential items including toiletries, underwear, socks, and t-shirts. Rinse & Renew remains free and open to all, with services offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The impact of the program is best reflected by one participant from last year, who shared that Rinse & Renew made him feel “like a million-dollar man.”

The first five sessions of the 2026 season are generously sponsored by Elizabeth and John Brooks, whose support has helped make these enhancements possible. Community members interested in sponsoring future sessions can contact Alyson Novick at 401-846-4828 ext. 102.
