Mayor Donald Grebien announced, with the overwhelming support of the City Council, that the City of Pawtucket has acquired 9.49 acres of land from Riverside Cemetery, significantly expanding preserved open space within the city.

This acquisition is a decisive move to replace and protect green space while the city continues its unprecedented economic resurgence. As development accelerates, Pawtucket is making it clear: growth and preservation must go hand in hand.

This land will expand access to outdoor space, strengthen neighborhood connectivity, improve environmental resilience, and protect natural resources for generations to come. Expanding public access to the waterfront remains a key goal of the City’s broader revitalization strategy, and this purchase represents a meaningful step toward that vision

“As Pawtucket continues its historic revitalization, we are committed to ensuring that progress does not come at the expense of green space,” said Mayor Grebien. “This acquisition protects natural land, enhances neighborhood livability, and strengthens our environmental future. We are building a city that is vibrant, resilient, and balanced.”

The newly acquired property will contribute to expanded recreational opportunities, environmental preservation, and improved quality of life for residents across the community.

The City will engage residents and stakeholders in determining appropriate long-term uses consistent with conservation and public benefit goals.
