Rhode Island’s Youth Summer Jobs and Summer School Offerings

COVID-19 has disrupted the entire Rhode Island economy, including opportunities for traditional “summer jobs” for youth. There are federal funds available to subsidize summer jobs for youth ages 16-24 in RI. This new summer jobs program will allow youth to contribute to the COVID-19 recovery, serve their community, build workplace skills, and earn money.

On the state’s website, ReopeningRI.com, there is information and an application to identify opportunities through partners across the state for paid summer work/service for youth ages 16-24. To apply:

• Eligible applicants include community-based organizations and non-profits, municipalities, schools and school districts, and private employers.
• Eligible youth employees must be between the ages of 16-24 inclusive, reside (or attend college) in the State of RI, and be legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Job opportunities must be related to the state’s efforts to respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic as described further below; applications will be evaluated for appropriateness of work described, community impact, and potential skill/experience gains for youth.
• Selected applicants will be required to manage their own recruitment, selection, supervision, and payment of youth employees, either themselves or through a partner organization. Applicants (or a designated partner) must act as the employer of record and pay wages to youth, determine employment eligibility, manage payroll, and ensure proper liability coverage. Applicants are welcome to partner with another organization for any aspects of program implementation.
• Once selected, the employer of record will enter into an agreement with the GWB.  The GWB will fund youth employee wages and reasonable program implementation costs on a per participant basis and will advance 50% of the costs. The second payment will be on a reimbursement basis and Employers must provide full fiscal documentation and must retain that documentation for audit purposes.

SAIL with PrepareRI

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), is offering distance learning opportunities for public school students enrolled in grades PreK – 12 from June 22, 2020 through August 28, 2020. This is a temporary program designed to enhance the educational opportunities to our students who suffered learning losses during the peak of Rhode Island’s COVID 19 health crisis. 

There are over 50 courses listed, all online, and from CCRI to RWU and the Nurses Institute Middle College.

SAIL has the potential to provide distance learning summer-long classes that are the equivalent to a course credit, summer-long opportunities that are not equivalent to a course credit, weekly or bi-weekly workshops and/or boot camps, daily reoccurring programming, and/or one-time programming that provide students the opportunity to participate in learning experiences academic or enrichment experiences. Distance learning opportunities are encouraged to optimize student engagement.
