Our original story on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, 9-11-2025 —

Charlie Kirk is dead. He was assassinated at 31 years old doing what he loved – speaking before a few thousand college students by tossing out autographed hats to the crowd, and setting up a microphone for people to walk up to and “ask me anythingâ€. And the dialogue would begin. He had an opinion, and he expressed it. He listened. He really listened. He would say, “if you disagree with me, come to the front of the lineâ€.

Roll back the world thousands of years, and you would think you were at a youthful Socrates event – or maybe one of the early Kennedys who were told – and expected to – come to the dinner table with a position to bring forth and knowledge of the world around them. Be prepared for that lively discussion!

The shooting took place at Utah Valley University, where he was set up under a small tent, with approximately 2,000 students and a majority of young people in front of him. There were several conservative media people who lived nearby who traveled with their families to hear him speak.  He was kind of a big deal.

The single shot appeared to come from a distance and hit Charlie in the neck. He reeled backwards. People around him rushed him into a car for transport to a hospital, where he was reported in critical condition for some time. It would be a post by President Trump on Truth that Charlie had died.

Screenshot of a tweet expressing condolences and admiration for a deceased individual.

A suspect was arrested, but soon released, mistakenly identified as the shooter. A short time later an announcement was made that the shooter was apprehended, only to also release that person as well. A hunt is on for the shooter at this time (check back here for updates).

The University says the shot was fired from 200 yards away and the shooter is still at large as of this writing. There were many people with cell phones and if anyone has video they are encouraged to get it to authorities. As of this writing, students and personnel are told to shelter in place.

President Trump has ordered the lowering of flags on all federal buildings until Sunday.

Charlie was married to his wife, Erica, and he was the father of two young children.

Turning Point USA’s student program exists to educate young people about the importance of limited government, free markets, and freedom. They were established on 3,500 campuses.

A tribute post honoring Charles James Kirk with a heartfelt message.

___

Charlie Kirk came to speak at Brown University in December of 2019, his 1st visit to an Ivy League College:

The Brown Daily Herald covered Kirk’s appearance, which was not a highlight for the University in tolerance of diverse opinions.

The news article began, “In a contentious night of debate between Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and University students, Kirk spoke for over an hour on Wednesday about his conservative viewpoints. “This is what it’s all about,†Kirk told a packed auditorium in 85 Waterman St. at the beginning of his evening at the University. “Free flow of conversation.â€

He was brought to campus by the Brown Republicans. A handful of protesters holding signs outside of 85 Waterman St. greeted attendees as they entered the building for the event. Officers from both the University Department of Public Safety and the Providence Police Department were present, as well as Kirk’s personal security.

Throughout his opening remarks, Kirk was met with cheers — from a small section of student supporters in the front of the room — as well as jabs and laughter from other parts of the audience.

“All members of the Brown community have the right to invite speakers to campus, extended equally – Brown must be a place that supports the free exchange of ideas, even when that means making space for ideas that are challenging or controversial. We have a high threshold for discomfort.â€

Brown does not appear to have a chapter of Turning Point on campus any longer. A Republican Club is on the long list of college organizations, but it is unclear if it is active. There is a Brown Democrats group which is active. There is a RI Turning Point organization which has an active “X†account with approximately 700 followers; WEBSITE. Their site leads to a Facebook page for the “Rhode Island Conservatives†with approximately 1,400 members.

Media Coverage – Congress reaction

Several outlets and independents featured back to back coverage of the events. One outlet, MSNBC fired Political Analyst Matthew Dowd, after this exchange: “Katy Tur asked Dowd about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens.†Dowd responded with the following about Kirk: “He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.â€

As the US House of Representatives was in session, word made its way of the killing of Kirk. A representative asked for a moment of silence – eruptions from the Democratic group in the room began to be heard with “No…No…†– and order was restored with a moment of silence announced for the end of the session.

President Trump, who announced Kirk’s death, taped a video message, and posted several times on his social media.

Rhode Island Reaction

The Rhode Island Democratic Party:  “This afternoon on a Utah college campus, a true tragedy occurred. It is a tragedy for Charlie Kirk’s family and friends. And it is a tragedy for all of us. Americans cannot and must not resolve political differences with a gun. This must stop. There is no place for this violence in our political discourse. It is a mistake to dismiss this as the act of one deranged individual. There is a political culture making these murderous acts seem almost normal. It is incumbent on every political leader in America to tone down the rhetoric. To eliminate hate from political agendas. Let us be mindful that we are family, friends, and neighbors. On behalf of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, we send our deepest condolences to the Kirk family. And let us vow to be part of a less violent future.â€

As we go to publication early on September 11th, we have no other statements from our four Congressional representatives, or the Governor.

The Rhode Island Republican Party issued this statement:

Official statement on Charlie Kirk from the University of Utah faculty.

Joint Statement posted to “X†by the Rhode Island Young Republicans and Rhode Island Young Democrats:

Rhode Island Young Republicans and Young Democrats unite for a joint statement.
