Held Saturday, May 10 at five Navigant Credit Union branch locations, these events are aimed at helping Rhode Islanders protect their personal financial data
Navigant Credit Union continued its “Community Shred Event” series on Saturday, May 10, shredding and recycling more than 22,000 pounds of sensitive documents across five Rhode Island locations.
Hosted in partnership with ShredRI, Navigant Credit Union’s shred event was held across branch locations in East Providence, Chepachet, Cumberland, South Kingstown, and Warwick. During these events, all Rhode Islanders – regardless of whether they are Navigant Credit Union members – were invited to drop off their personal or professional documents to be shredded and recycled, free-of-charge.

“Helping Rhode Islanders protect themselves against fraud and identity theft is a key component to improving the financial well-being of Rhode Island families and businesses, and we were thrilled to see so many Rhode Islanders embrace this opportunity last weekend,” said Navigant Credit Union President and CEO Kathy Orovitz. “These events not only allow people the opportunity to properly dispose of sensitive documents, but they also spread awareness about the importance of responsible record-keeping and cybersecurity. After the success of our first Community Shred Event last October, we are proud to continue offering this community service and look forward to further events later this year.”
Shredding sensitive documents is one of the most impactful actions a person can take to protect their identity and financial security. However, according to a 2019 study, 27% of Americans do not shred paper or physical documents containing sensitive information before throwing them away at home, and 28% of Americans do not shred similar documents before throwing them away at work. These Community Shred Events are aimed at closing this gap and helping protect Rhode Islanders.
Since launching these Community Shred Events last October, Navigant Credit Union has helped dispose of more than 46,000 pounds of personal and business documents.
