ART! Hygienic’s “Beneath the Surface”, New London

Three Visionary New London Area Artists Featured at Hygienics’s “Beneath the Surface”

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary artistic journey at the Hygienic Art Gallery in New London, where three visionary artists—Diane Brown, Catherine Mansell, and Joan Mullins—await to transcend your perception of contemporary art. From February 15 to March 15, 2025, the gallery becomes a portal into the theme “Beneath the Surface,” a three-person exhibition teeming with depth, texture, and historical echoes. Meet all three artists at the opening this coming Saturday, February 15th, from 6-9PM.

Diane Brown’s artwork pulsates with life as she explores abstract art through vibrant colors, dynamic shapes, and intricate textures. She brings unparalleled energy to her pieces, allowing the viewer to delve into rhythmic movements and bold expressions crafted from layers of oil and cold wax.

Catherine Mansell, known for her blending of ancient art practices, invites viewers to explore the wisdom of history through her use of encaustic wax painting and buon fresco techniques. Her work evokes the haunting beauty of aged architectural walls, merging the elegance of Asian brush painting with the ancient methods.

Joan Mullins attributes her style to her exposure to the art of diverse cultures. The vast landscapes of her Southern African childhood were among her earliest memories, followed in later years by the vistas of the Northern Hemisphere. She is inspired by art from the prehistoric to the contemporary.

While Mansell and Brown use different approaches, their shared affinity for wax mediums draws intriguing parallels. Their collective work delves beneath the surface of tradition, which invites spectators to appreciate the legacy of history while embracing the vibrant possibilities of abstract art. Mullins’ approach to her abstract paintings takes her into unchartered territory.  Her mixed media collages embrace an improvisational and intuitive method of composition. Her process is driven by a desire to contrast textures, colors and forms in visually exciting ways.
